Chatham County Police Department Issues Alert Over Financial Card Skimmers

The Chatham County Police Department has issued a warning to both merchants and consumers following the discovery of two financial card skimmers at local stores. Last week, skimmers were found at the Berwick and Johnny Mercer Boulevard Kroger stores.

These devices, which capture financial information from debit or credit cards, were detected at these locations. Customers who have used their cards at these stores are advised to monitor their financial transactions closely and report any suspicious activity to their bank.

Card skimmers often resemble legitimate card readers but may be slightly thicker and lack the protective keypad covering. This makes them difficult to detect, as the differences between skimmers and genuine card readers can be subtle. Merchants are advised to regularly check their card readers for signs of tampering.

The public is also urged to remain vigilant and inspect card readers for any signs of replacement or tampering. Additional skimmers may be placed at other locations, beyond those already identified.

Anyone with information on the individuals responsible for the skimmers is encouraged to contact the police. Anonymous tips can be submitted via the Chatham County Police Department app or the online tip form at Chatham County Police Tips. Tips can also be made through Crime Stoppers at 912-234-2020, where anonymity is guaranteed and cash rewards may be offered.
