Off-Duty Officer Charged with Obstruction Following Fatal Shooting in College Park

At the request of the City of South Fulton Police Department, GBI agents are investigating the death of 38-year-old Devon Anderson.

The investigation reveals that on August 5, 2024, at approximately 1:00 a.m., Melvin Potter, 30, an off-duty Atlanta Police Department officer, was at a bar with two other individuals on the 5000 block of Old National Highway in College Park, GA. As Potter was leaving the bar and escorting someone to their car, an argument broke out between him and another group. The situation escalated, leading Potter to shoot and kill Anderson.

Anderson was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. His body has been taken to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

The City of South Fulton Police Department has arrested and charged Potter with Obstruction.

The GBI investigation is active and ongoing.
