Juveniles Target Unlocked Cars in Athens, 12-year-old Armed Suspect Arrested

Athens-Clarke County Police Department reports an increase in thefts from unlocked cars, particularly targeting firearms and valuables. Residents are urged to lock their vehicles and secure belongings.

At 6:20 AM on July 12, 2024, officers responded to the 1000 block of Barnett Shoals Rd after witnesses reported juveniles entering cars. Two vehicles were stolen during the incident but recovered shortly thereafter.

A 12-year-old juvenile was apprehended and found in possession of a stolen firearm and other stolen items. Additional suspects are currently being sought. The juvenile faces charges including entering auto, motor vehicle theft, possession of a firearm by a minor, financial card theft, curfew violation, and loitering and prowling.
