Emory Decatur Hospital Unveils Million Endoscopy Center Renovation

Emory Decatur Hospital has announced a $4 million upgrade to its endoscopy center, converting 1,200 square feet into an advanced gastrointestinal (GI) procedure suite. This renovation aims to enhance patient care by allowing GI physicians to perform more interventional and minimally invasive procedures with state-of-the-art technology.

The project, completed after two years of planning and construction, transformed three multipurpose rooms into a dedicated GI procedure suite equipped with advanced medical imaging technology. This suite will enable clinicians to assess digestive tract diseases, diagnose and treat conditions related to the bile and pancreatic ducts, and manage Barrett’s esophagus, which results from stomach acid reflux.

Jen Schuck, CEO of Emory Decatur Hospital, stated, “We are thrilled about our ongoing investment in gastrointestinal care that supports our multidisciplinary team. This renovated space is critical for diagnosing and treating a variety of digestive diseases and providing outstanding patient-centered care in Decatur and across the metro Atlanta region.”

The new suite includes the EndoFLIP, a device designed to measure the pressure and dimensions of the esophagus and stomach, aiding in the diagnosis of esophageal and stomach disorders.

Starting this fall, the GI suite will also enable the performance of double balloon enteroscopy, a specialized endoscopic procedure for small bowel evaluation and treatment. Dr. Sonali Sakaria, clinical chief of gastroenterology at Emory Decatur, emphasized, “Having the balloon enteroscopy procedure available at Emory Decatur for advanced evaluation of the small bowel will provide increased access to this specialized procedure for our patients in the Decatur area, across Atlanta and throughout the state.”

Emory Decatur Hospital becomes one of only two facilities in Georgia, alongside Emory University Hospital, offering this procedure.
