Officer-Involved Shooting in Atlanta After Pursuit and Carjacking Attempt
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has launched an inquiry into an officer-involved shooting in Atlanta, GA, at the behest of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred on Sunday, June 23, 2024, resulting in the injury of a minor. Fortunately, no law enforcement officers were harmed.
The sequence of events began with the arrest of Rashauny Mike Palmer, aged 25, by the Dallas Police Department. Palmer faced serious charges, including aggravated assault and kidnapping. Despite being handcuffed and placed in the rear of a police patrol vehicle, Palmer managed to escape and absconded in his Dodge Charger.
Subsequently, a Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deputy spotted Palmer’s vehicle on I-20 East and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. Palmer, however, refused to comply and evaded capture. In an effort to immobilize the fleeing vehicle, the deputy executed a pit maneuver. Despite this intervention, Palmer’s Charger collided with a tractor-trailer before coming to a halt near the Fulton Industrial Blvd exit ramp.
Palmer then attempted to carjack a BMW at a BP Gas station located at 4335 Fulton Industrial Blvd. During the attempted carjacking, shots were fired by the deputy, resulting in a minor who was in the BMW being struck by gunfire. Emergency services responded swiftly, transporting the injured minor to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Following a swift response, Palmer was apprehended by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. He now faces a multitude of charges spanning various jurisdictions, including felony fleeing and attempting to elude, hijacking a motor vehicle in the second degree, and cruelty to children.
The GBI continues to conduct an impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting incident. Upon completion of their investigation, the case file will be transferred to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for thorough review and determination of any further legal action.
