High-Speed Chase Across Clarke and Madison Counties Ends in Arrest of Armed Robbery Suspect
On June 5, 2024, Athens-Clarke County Police officers attempted to stop a vehicle involved in the armed robbery of an individual. The driver exited the vehicle, and the passenger took control, speeding away from the officers. The vehicle fled at speeds exceeding 100 mph on Danielsville Road.
For safety reasons, officers discontinued the chase as the vehicle proceeded into Madison County. Madison County deputies later located the vehicle at the suspect’s residence, where the suspect ran into his home. After a brief standoff, the suspect surrendered to Madison County deputies and Athens-Clarke County officers.
A search warrant executed on the residence resulted in the recovery of the firearm used in the robbery. The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Shakur Thomas of Hull, GA, was charged with Aggravated Assault, Armed Robbery, Possession of a Weapon during the Commission of a Crime, Fleeing and Attempting to Elude, Theft by Taking Motor Vehicle, and Obstruction.
