Rabun County Sheriff Arrested on Charges of Public Indecency and Sexual Battery

Rabun County Sheriff Chad Nichols, 45, of Clayton, Georgia, has been arrested and charged by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) with Public Indecency, Sexual Battery, and Violation of Oath by a Public Officer. The charges stem from an incident that prompted Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney George Christian to request GBI involvement on May 24, 2024.

Nichols voluntarily surrendered himself and was processed at the Rabun County Detention Center. The investigation remains active.

Governor Kemp issued an executive order forming an investigative committee to examine Nichols’ arrest. Attorney General Chris Carr, Morgan County Sheriff Robert Markley, and Jackson County Sheriff Janis Magnum are tasked with this inquiry. The committee must submit its findings to Kemp within 30 days.
