Georgia Memorial Day Travel Period: 11 Fatalities in Traffic Crashes, Over 500 Incidents

During the Memorial Day holiday travel period spanning 78 hours, Georgia State Patrol (GSP) Troopers looked into 8 fatal traffic crashes, while local law enforcement agencies probed 3 additional fatal crashes, leading to a total of 11 deaths statewide.

The local law enforcement agencies involved in investigating fatalities during the holiday period, which commenced on Friday, May 24, at 6:00 p.m., and concluded on Monday, May 27, at 11:59 p.m., include the Atlanta Police Department, Clayton County Police Department, and Emerson Police Department.

Aside from the fatal crashes, Troopers were also engaged in examining over 500 traffic crashes across the state, resulting in almost 250 injuries. Over the course of the holiday period, Troopers and Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD) Officers conducted more than 24,000 traffic stops, apprehended nearly 500 individuals for driving under the influence (DUI), and issued upwards of 15,000 warnings and over 14,000 citations.
