Driver Killed in Hit-and-Run Accident on I-85 in Atlanta

On May 26, 2024, at approximately 11:50 p.m., officers from Atlanta Police Zone 5 responded to a report of a vehicle accident with injuries on I-85 northbound near 17th St. NW.

Upon arrival, officers found the driver of a Kia Optima in critical condition. The driver was transported to the hospital by ambulance, where they later succumbed to their injuries.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a Chevrolet Suburban, traveling at the I-75/85 northbound split, cut across the gore and entered I-85 northbound. The Chevrolet Suburban then struck the Kia Optima, which was parked on the right shoulder. The driver of the Chevrolet Suburban fled the scene.

Investigators with the Accident Investigations Unit responded to the scene to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
