GBI Investigates Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting in Roopville, Georgia

In Roopville, Carroll County, Georgia, an officer-involved shooting is under investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) at the request of the Georgia State Patrol. The incident resulted in the death of Jason Scott Fletcher, aged 51, from Hogansville, Heard County, Georgia.

According to preliminary information, the incident occurred around 3:00 p.m. when deputies from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office were investigating reports of mail thefts near the 500 block of Little New York Road in Carrollton. Deputies attempted to stop Fletcher, who was driving a car, but he refused to comply, initiating a pursuit. The chase proceeded towards the Roopville area, prompting deputies to seek assistance from the Georgia State Patrol.

A Georgia State Trooper responded and attempted to deploy stop sticks at the intersection of Highway 5 and Banks Circle in Roopville to halt Fletcher’s vehicle. However, Fletcher reportedly swerved his car, allegedly attempting to hit the trooper. In response, the trooper discharged his firearm, striking Fletcher.

Immediate first aid was administered at the scene before Fletcher was transported by ambulance to Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton, where he succumbed to his injuries.

No officers were reported injured during the incident.
