Atlanta Police Investigate Officer-Involved Shooting, Three Officers Injured

Atlanta police are currently investigating an officer-involved shooting at 1430 Desoto following a call reporting shots fired. Responding officers encountered an armed individual at approximately 5:15 pm, armed with a handgun and a knife.

As officers approached the man, he pulled out a handgun. One of the officers tackled the man and wrestled him to the ground. While on the ground, what sounded like a gunshot could be heard. The man was subsequently shot by APD officers, resulting in the individual’s death during the altercation.

Three officers sustained gunshot wounds during the incident but are alert, conscious, and receiving treatment at Grady Hospital. Mayor Andre Dickens provided an update confirming that the injured officers are in stable condition and good spirits.

Police Chief Darin Schierbaum stated that the investigation is in its early stages, limiting the available information. The wounded officers include a 31-year-old with four years of service, another 31-year-old with four years of service, and a 28-year-old with five months of service. Their injuries range from a shoulder wound, a leg wound, to a graze wound. Two of the officers will require surgery.

Initial reports indicated that officers were initially called to a commercial area on Fairbank Street, and they later located the armed individual on Desoto Avenue. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) will lead the ongoing investigation. The identity of the deceased suspect has not been released at this time.

UPDATE: The man who died in the officer involved shooting in Atlanta, GA on May 11, 2024, has been identified as Claudy Pierre Jules, age 41, of Maryland.
