Macon Investigators Educate Pediatric Staff on Preventing Infant Deaths

On April 18, 2024, Atrium Health Navicent’s pediatric staff received valuable insights into preventing Sudden Unexplained Infant Deaths (SUID) in Bibb County. Nicholas McCane and Dominique Williams, investigators from the Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office, led the session, drawing on their extensive 27 years of combined experience in investigating Violent Crimes and Crimes Against Children.

The class delved into the complexities of SUID and reviewed the investigation process for the 23 such deaths in Bibb County since 2021. Highlighting the significance of safe sleeping environments, the investigators stressed the importance of measures that can prevent these tragic incidents.

Attendees were reminded of District Attorney Anita Howard’s Anti-Cosleeping Initiative, which earned the GBI’s Child Fatality Review Board Prevention Award in 2022. This initiative aims to educate caregivers about the risks of co-sleeping with infants.

The Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office expressed pride in contributing to the community’s awareness and safety through sharing vital information with the pediatric staff at Atrium Health Navicent.
