Gwinnett County Detectives Arrest Suspect Selling Vehicle with False VIN
Gwinnett County Detectives successfully apprehended a suspect for selling a vehicle with a false Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) after a victim reported the issue to the police. The victim had purchased a Ford Transit van through Facebook Marketplace, but upon trying to register the vehicle, discovered discrepancies in the VIN. Detectives verified that the VIN displayed was indeed false, and further investigation revealed that the van was stolen from Ohio.
Working with the victim, detectives arranged to purchase another vehicle from the seller. With the assistance of officers from the K9 Unit, along with the East and North Precinct Community Response Teams, they arrested the suspect, Emir Mehic, aged 24, in Lawrenceville. Mehic was taken into custody without any trouble and has been charged with Theft by Deception. He is currently held at the Gwinnett County Jail.
Detectives emphasized the importance of verifying the seller’s identity against the vehicle title and recommended consumers to obtain vehicle history reports from authorized vendors to prevent such incidents in the future.
