Two Dead in Millen Fatal Shooting Incident at Veteran Center

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has initiated an investigation into the deaths of Tyrell Brown, 28, from Garfield, Georgia, and Maxine Jones, 48, from Millen, Georgia, at the request of the Millen Police Department.

According to reports, on March 24, 2024, around 1:45 a.m., officers from the Millen Police Department responded to a shooting incident at the Annie P. Chance Veteran’s Center on Acorn Avenue in Millen. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered Jones with a gunshot wound and Brown without visible injuries. Both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.

Later, at approximately 7:10 a.m., another shooting occurred on Wasdin Street, believed to be linked to the earlier incident. There were no reported injuries from this subsequent incident.

The bodies of Brown and Jones will undergo autopsies at the GBI Crime Lab in Pooler, Georgia, to determine the exact cause and manner of death.

The investigation remains active, and authorities urge anyone with information to contact the Millen Police Department at 478-982-2750 or the GBI Regional Investigative Office in Statesboro at 912-871-1121. Once the investigation concludes, the case will be forwarded to the Ogeechee Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for further legal proceedings.

CORRECTION: The victims’ injuries have been updated – Law enforcement arrived on scene and found Brown with a gunshot wound and Jones with no immediate signs of trauma. 

UPDATE: The GBI has arrested and charged Raheem Whitfield, age 28, of Waynesboro, Burke County, Georgia, with Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime in connection to the deaths of Brown and Jones. Whitfield turned himself in and is currently booked at the Jenkins County Jail. 

Preliminary information from the autopsy determined that Brown and Jones each had a gunshot wound.
