Beginning Monday, March 18, speed limit cameras installed at Stratford Academy and First Presbyterian Day School will commence issuing tickets to vehicles violating speed limits. A delay in ticketing ensued while the systems for reduced limit lights were calibrated, during which only warnings were issued.

The enforcement of speed limits through cameras is already operational in various school zones across the area, including Northeast High & Appling Middle, Rutland Middle & High, Weaver Middle, and several others.

Mayor Miller emphasized the importance of this measure, stating, “With the camera enforcement, we are able to begin changing people’s behavior, improve everyone’s safety in these areas, and allow our deputies to focus on other issues.”

The cameras will be active during school days, from an hour before the start of classes until an hour after dismissal. Notably, the cameras enforce both the regular and reduced speed limits throughout the day, unlike the flashing lights which indicate only the start and end of school.

Citations will be issued when vehicles exceed the posted speed limit within a school zone by more than 10 miles per hour. The initial citation will cost $100, with subsequent citations amounting to $150 each. Funds collected from fines will be dedicated to local law enforcement or public safety initiatives.

“These citations will not show up on a person’s driving record nor be used for ‘points’ with their insurance,” assured Mayor Miller. All citations undergo review by the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office to ensure compliance with Macon-Bibb’s Code.
