Hit-and-Run Involving Patrol Vehicle Leaves Atlanta Officer Injured

Late on the night of March 10, 2024, officers responded to a hit-and-run incident at Lakewood Ave and Pecan Dr. SW, involving a patrol vehicle. The vehicle responsible for the collision fled the scene, leaving the officer involved with minor head injuries, necessitating transport to the hospital.

Witnesses reported that the driver of the fleeing vehicle escaped on foot. Georgia State Patrol (GSP) and Atlanta Police Department (APD) K-9 units were called to aid in the search for suspects. Shortly after, officers discovered a male suspect hiding in a nearby wooded area.

The detained individual, identified as 38-year-old Hector Martinez, claimed to be a passenger and not the driver. He admitted fleeing the scene due to his lack of U.S. citizenship. Martinez was charged with Open Container as open cans of alcohol were found in the vehicle. He was then transported to City Jail, while the suspect vehicle was impounded.

GSP will lead the ongoing investigation into the accident, while the identity of the driver remains unknown as the investigation progresses.
