Columbus Officer’s Heroic Actions Save Elderly Woman from Burning Home

Officer Michael Coley of the Columbus Police Department displayed extraordinary bravery and quick thinking in the early hours of May 10, 2024. While patrolling the area of Veterans Parkway and Hancock Road, he detected the scent of smoke despite no reports of a fire. Investigating further, he discovered a residence ablaze in the 2900 block of Waterhill Road.

Without hesitation, Officer Coley sprang into action. He alerted dispatch and immediately began knocking on doors and windows to wake any residents. Neighbors informed him that an 89-year-old woman was inside the burning home, asleep in her bedroom. With the fire intensifying and firefighters still en route, Officer Coley entered the smoke-filled house, located the elderly woman asleep in her bedroom in the rear of the house and guided her to safety.

Upon the arrival of Columbus Fire and EMS, Officer Coley and his colleagues assisted in firefighting efforts, demonstrating their commitment to community safety.
