Bibb County Breaks Ground on 150-Bed Jail Expansion to Improve Mental Health Care, Security

MACON, Ga. – Bibb County officials officially broke ground Friday on a major expansion of the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Center that will add 150 jail beds and enhance services for inmates with mental and physical health needs.

Sheriff David Davis was joined by community leaders and honored guests for the groundbreaking ceremony, marking the start of a project aimed at expanding the county’s correctional capacity and improving public safety.

The new addition will increase the jail’s capacity by 150 inmates while providing improved housing and accommodations for individuals with mental and physical health challenges.

According to the sheriff’s office, the project will also strengthen the facility’s maximum-security capabilities, allowing the jail to better meet current operational needs and future population growth.

The expansion is being funded through the county’s Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) program.

“This groundbreaking marks an important milestone for our county and our Sheriff’s Office,” Sheriff Davis said. “The new addition will allow us to provide a safer, more appropriate environment for inmates with mental and physical health challenges while creating better working conditions for our dedicated staff. This investment ensures we are prepared to meet the needs of our growing community for many years to come.”

County officials said the project reflects Bibb County’s continued investment in public safety, correctional services and the well-being of both inmates and detention staff.
