Teen Turns Himself In on Charges in Fatal Bibb County Crash That Claimed Passenger’s Life

MACON, Ga. — An 18-year-old has turned himself in on charges stemming from a fatal traffic crash that occurred last month at the intersection of Knoxville Road and Bethel Church Road.

According to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, 18-year-old Amari Antwon Cheeley surrendered at the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center at approximately 5:51 a.m. on July 6.

Cheeley was arrested on warrants charging him with:

  • Homicide by Vehicle
  • Serious Injury by Vehicle
  • Disregard for a Stop Sign

The charges stem from a crash that occurred just before 10 p.m. on June 4.

According to investigators, a Nissan Altima was traveling southbound on Knoxville Road when an Audi SUV, traveling eastbound on Bethel Church Road, entered the intersection. The two vehicles collided.

A passenger in the Nissan, 52-year-old Tony Gales, suffered serious injuries in the crash and was transported to a local hospital. He later died from his injuries.

The investigation by the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office led to the issuance of arrest warrants for Cheeley.
