Power Crews Targeted by Gunfire in Rabun County, Gunman Arrested
NORTHEAST GEORGIA – The Rabun County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a Lakemont man after deputies say he threatened and fired shots at utility workers who were trying to restore electrical service.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, deputies were called to the area of Bluebird Lane and Old Highway 441 after reports that a man was threatening and shooting at power crews working in the area. The crews were attempting to restore electricity when the incident occurred.
Deputies responded and conducted a search of the surrounding area. As a result of that search, 56-year-old Bobby Allen Mashburn of Lakemont was located and taken into custody without further incident. A firearm was also seized during the investigation.
Following the investigation, Mashburn was arrested and charged with one count of reckless conduct, two counts of terroristic threats, and two counts of aggravated assault.
Sheriff Mark A. Gerrells emphasized that threats or acts of violence toward utility workers or anyone performing essential services will not be tolerated in Rabun County. These workers are critical to public safety, particularly during times when services are being restored, and any actions that put them at risk are taken very seriously.
“This incident remains under investigation,” the Sheriff’s Office stated, noting that Mashburn is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
“I appreciate the cooperation of all agencies and personnel involved and thank the power crews for their continued efforts to serve our community,” Sheriff Gerrells said in a statement.
